XIV. International Rally Albena - Zlatni Piassatzi - Sliven.
15th round of the ERC Coeff.4, 3rd Round of the Peace and Friendship Championsip

Albena stage-times:
Zanini - 8m 54s
Ferjáncz - 9m 16s

There were some rain on the first few tarmac stages.
After ss.8.:
1. Ferjáncz
2. Zanini +22s
On the stages around Sliven - Zanini took the lead.
After ss.30. Ferjáncz had engine problem, it was working under 4000rpm only.
Zanini destroyed the suspension of his Talbot on the stage "Elena". Their service changed it only 8 minutes.
They late 4 minutes at the next time-control. Kept the lead.
Chubrikov went off the road on the stage "Aladja", he spent 3 minutes off the road.

Do you know what happened with them ?
What is the reason of their retirement ? Mechanical failure or accident ?

About Leonidas I translate from a newspaper:
"The biggest surprise was Leonidas' retirement. He left the rally without any failures in the car. The reason for his retirement was that his service made a mistake on the route and couldn't find him for tyre change and refueling before the start of SS11 - Yazovira."

Later I will add some more information about the rally.

There was a rumour, that I heard at the Finish of Zlatni-83:
Leonidas thought about himself: he is the gravel favorite at Rallye Zlatni 83.
He lost a lot of times on the gravel-stages compare to Zanini, Ferjáncz, Chubrikov, Petkov....
Simply, he was very disappointed - went home...... :wink:

I think you should write more of your impressions from these rallies where you were :)
Here I translate an interview with the winner Zanini:
First of all I want to thank for the perfect organization of rally "Albena - Zlatni Piassatzi - Sliven". The organization cannot be compared for example with the rally in France, it was much better and from the previos years when I took part too. The rally is harder, more complex and mainly more concentrated now from which you benefit in time. Crucial were the gravel stages and mostly the four passings of the exceptionally professional stage "Yazovira". The experts can show their high class there and the younger can gain experience. When I saw how many are the Renault 5 Turbos I was a bit scared, I also know very well the performance of Ferjancz, Leonidas, Chubrikov, Petkov. My biggest problem were my otherwise very good mechanics, who don't understand Bulgarian and hardly managed with the roads. Once my car needed a repair and I stopped in somebody else's service. It turned out that they were the mechanics of my biggest rival Ferjancz. In the moment they started work to repair my car. Seconds later Ferjancz himself appeared. I thought that he will expel me but he behaved nobly and waited for me, although he couldn't service his car in time.

I like these times when rivals helped each other in such a way. I know that things were the same between Ferjancz, Chubrikov, Altenheimer...

Yes, absolutely....
On some rallyes mechanics of Ferjáncz worked more on the rivals cars than on their own.
1985-Zlatni:
Lancia 037-Cerrato arrived to the Ferjáncz-service without lights in the middle of the night.
Our mechanics helped to him, Cerrato can start the next special-stage with perfect lights.
Vida-85:
Ferjánc team worked more on the engine of Chubrikovs R5Turbo than Ferjánczs car....
1973 YU Rallye:
60 km before the Finish of the rallye Ferjáncz gave fuel for works Fiat driver Donatella Tominz, who stopped on the last road section(they run out of fuel).
Results:
1. Tominz
2. Ferjáncz..... :shock:

And many times Ferjáncz-team got help from other teams too.
That was a completely different World.....

Route 1290km with 36 special stages.
77 crews from 13 countries started and 35 finished.
Zanini won 27 stages and in 16 from them was faster than previous year's best times.

Unfortunately no times from SS8. It was "Varbitsa", one of the legendary stages on rally Zlatni. On this stage usually there were big gaps in the results. It was said that those who win "Varbitsa" will win the rally.

Probably it was the stage Tvarditsa. I don't have a map from the rally to see where exactly were the start and final, but from these stages I think it is the closest to the town of Elena.

It was taken after that stage, suspension change on the Talbot-Lotus of Zanini.
Unfortunately, you can not see too much recognizable in the background of this photo.

They passed through (or near) Elena between stages SS20 Bebrovo and SS21 Tvarditsa in the day (and between stages SS13 and SS14 - the same but in opposite direction and at night). I spoke with ftabaton from the forum who knows very well this part of the route. He saw the picture and the conclusion is that most probably Zanini broke suspension on SS20 Bebrovo and the picture is taken after the finish of this stage.
