Thank you!
Could you recommend a place to watch the rally on saturday? Some place where could see more than one corner..

And what do you think, is it possible to change place during the day? For example SS7, SS8 and SS10?

Hello!
It's good to hear that someone (from Finland, I guess :D) is comming to our rally!

So, Saturday...

SS5/SS8 Sestrimo - the first part is comparatively wide with some attracted places (long hairpins) to watch. Then, about 7km into the stage, when the road turns right, it becomes very, very tight with almost no places to watch. The road, though, is very technical and good for drivers, but that can not be said for the public :(
Here is an onboard video from last year's Rally Bulgaria. It is captured from the car of the Bulgarian crew Petar Gyoshev/Dimitar Spasov - http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video. ... 2019865614
The place, where the stage started last year, as you see, was just after the beginning of this second, tight part I told you about.
On this part, unfortunately, was killed the Italian co-driver Flavio Guglielmini...you will see the crash scene at the end of the video.

SS6/SS9 Peshtera - it is a classic stage of the Bulgarian rally sport, used as a stage from another Bulgarian rally event - Rally Hebros. The first part of it (about 9km till the junction) is also used in a hillclimb event - ofcourse it is named Peshtera Hillclimb.
It's first 9km (as I said - which are part of the hillclimb) are the best part according to me. The whole road is like Rally New Zealand, but on tarmac :D - with very, very nice inner cambers on the corners. The tarmac is old, but in great shape. There are many places to watch. I recommand you to stand about 700 meters after the start, on a loop of 4 corners (all with inner cambers). It is a great place, where I personally have been on many occasions. It is very easy to reach this place by foot. You even can cut the road to the place by walking through the mountain rather than the asphalt :D

SS7/SS10 Lyubnitza - major part of this stage is used in SS Muhovo (on Sunday). It has everything - wide places for the drivers and for the public, but also tight places, which are not good for watching, because of the thick vegetation. I like the stage, because the road is going from wide roads with old tarmac to tight roads with new tarmac...and reverse :D
This variant of the stage was used for the first time in 2009 (despite, that after the crash of Bryan Lavio, where Flavio died, it was passed only non-competitively). Till 2008 about 2km or 3km of it were not tarmac (grass/gravel) but they have been sealed especially for the rally and they are very narrow and good to watch.

So, this was basically what you have to know about Saturday.

About the moving from one stage to another on Saturday - maybe you need to have someone, who knows the roads well. It will definitely be faster to move from one stage to another with such a guy especially in Bulgaria :D
I think it is possible to go from SS5 to SS7, then go back to SS8 (which is second running of SS5) and then go back to SS10 (which is second running of SS7). In this case you will have be close to the start of SS5 and SS8 and close to the finish of SS7 and SS10.
But doing this variant you will miss this good place I was talking about, which is located SS6/SS9. It's up to you :D

Thank you very much for the great information! We have a group of about 15 guys, and we stay in Sofia. Our plan is to rent a mini bus with a driver to take us to the rally area. I guess a bus is not the best vehicle in narrow mountain roads with a lot of traffic, so maybe we won't try to move between stages :)
Let's just hope the vulcano in Iceland (Tekla?) won't blow up and stop the european aviation again...

Yeah, with bus it will be even harder. So, you have to choose some place and watch from there.

Dear crews and fans, I am an amateur rally pilot from Bulgaria, where the next WRC event
will take place. Although, I am not going to participate the rally, I would like to share with you my SS notes :) Enjoy!

Rally Bulgaria 2010 Stage Notes

SS1/3 Batak Lake 31.77km - Hot & Cold

This stage is a permanent part of another well known Bulgarian rally - Hebros. We can easily separate the SS 32km into four parts, each featuring different challenges.

The first part starts at the Dobra Voda hotel and goes uphill till the 9th km to the Peshtera crossroad. The road was reconstructed a few years ago and is in good condition. Nevertheless, the tarmac is not very grippy and on some places you may expect a lot of gravel, after the first few cars cut the corners. At the beginning of the stage you will have to pass a number of hairpin turns, but then the road becomes wider and faster. Anyway, this is just the beginning of the SS Batak Lake.

The 5km long second part starts at the crossroad to Peshtera and continues to the holiday village St. Konstantin & Elena (14th km). The stage goes deep into the woods, thus the tarmac is getting colder and excessively slippery. The road is old, but not very bumpy. The crews will have to find the fastest way trough a few similar series of corners, all ending with very tight & slippery hard lefts.

The area around the holiday village St. Konstantin & Elena is the highest point of the stage. The third part goes 6km fast downhill to the side of a Batak dam lake (20th km). The tarmac is very similar to the first part of the stage, as the road has been reconstructed as well. There are a few hairpin corners, where one must expect a lot of gravel, but the rest of the road consists of fast corner sets.
Approaching the Batak dam lake, the crews will find an open flat road and better grip. The road goes for 12km along the beautiful lake shore and passes through a small holiday village. Although there is a clear view to most of the corners, you will meet some very demanding left corners where you can’t see anything but the horizon. In addition, competitors must be aware of the concrete wall, close to the left hand side of the road. If it’s raining, be aware of water splashes and dirty tarmac.

In conclusion: It is not a starter; it is a long tough and challenging stage to examine your ability to change the pace.

SS 2/4 Belmeken Lake 27.57km - A breath of fresh air

Belmeken Lake is a distinctive stage of rally Bulgaria. The start is at an altitude of 1800m; topping out at 2100m and then the road goes down to 1200m of altitude. So don’t be surprised if your engine struggles for oxygen and if you see melting snow around in July.
The stage starts at the Hristo Smirnenski mountain hostel and goes for 6km into the pinewood and alps. This is a new part of the stage; usually it is used for snow-driving practicing in winter time. Nevertheless, it is fast (with just one slow section) and extremely grippy – you will warm your tires in just a few corners.

Then you will have to change the pace as the stage goes trough a very narrow biathlon track – interesting experience, but be very careful as just a small inaccuracy can take you out of the race.

After a sharp hairpin, an awesome panorama of Belmeken dam lake surrounding will burst in your view. But don’t spend too much time sightseeing, as you have to go flat out! This third part of the stage is about 6km of very fast, grippy and bumpy open road alongside the Belmeken dam lake. Be aware of dirt and stones on the road and don’t hesitate to cut some of the corners. This part of the stage is quite tricky due to the rapid change in weather conditions – you may experience a heavy rain and wet road and in less than 15 minutes - bright sun and dry tarmac. So be careful with the tire choice: even if there is information for rain in that area, it may be gone until you get there. It is usually 10-15 degrees colder up there.

Belmeken Lake is one of the favorite spectators’ place and you will find a lot of fans’ support at the north dam, where the road goes round. This is a very short, but slow, twisty and slippery part of the stage, so don’t push too much there! Watch carefully for the hairpin right at the 12.84km mark, then speed up for a 3km uphill with a nice grip to reach the highest point of the stage!
From now on, think about the brakes, as you will need them to get down 900 meters in altitude in just 12km. The road surface is grippy and slightly bumpy and comprises many diverse corner combinations. Although, it looks hard to drive downhill, I would say that this part of the stage is great to drive.

The finish is close to the Chaira Pumped Storage Power Station. Here is the World highest Pumping Head, but you can’t see it as a larger part of this huge construction is under the ground, applying unique engineering ideas.

In conclusion: The fast part at high altitude will force your engine to the max, then the steep downhill will test your brakes and gearbox, meanwhile watch for dirty and slippery places!

SS 5/8 Sestrimo 27.5 km - Fasten your seatbelt, this ride will be bumpy

This is a pure uphill stage, which starts at 500m near the Sestrimo village and finishes at Belmeken Dam Lake at 2000m altitude. The first 6km of the stage are relatively fast and wide, but the road twists between the mountain rocks and on the edge of a precipice, thus please, stick to the perfect line. In to the next 6 km the track is narrowing and becomes more slippery, as it goes in to the wood. At the end of this part you will pass trough a power station block, near a small neat lake, be aware of concrete walls and rock.

While the first 12 km of the stage are in good condition, from here on it is hard to call it a tarmac road. Be prepared for the worst tarmac road you have ever seen! It is very tight and extremely bumpy, so you may expect jumps to throw you out of the racing line. The tarmac is not homogeneous and in addition you will find a lot of stones and sand around. The good news is that you have to climb a very steep uphill with many hairpin corners and just a few bumpy straights so the speed is not that high. In its last 5 km the stage becomes flatter and faster, but still narrow, bumpy and dirty.

In conclusion, be very careful and stay on the road, especially in the last 15km.

SS 6/9 Peshtera 18.1 km - Up and down roller coaster

After passing trough the narrow SS Sestrimo, Peshtera stage will look like a motorway. The first part of the stage is typical uphill track, which is part of the national hillclimb race calendar, so don’t be very surprised if a local driver sets a good pace. Here you have to push hard and keep the perfect racing line in a number of corners sets. Usually it is very hot at the start of the stage, but then the road goes into the forest, where the tarmac is not so warm.

After a 9 km uphill you will reach the top of the stage at the Dobra Voda crossroad (the bears place). The stage continues 9 km downhill to Dobra Voda hotel, it is the same road which is part of the Batak Lake stage – new smooth but slippery tarmac, expect gravel on some corners. Once you go downhill, you have to go flat out through some fast corners, but at the very end of the stage you will have to pass a number of hairpin turns.

In conclusion: Wide & fast road; 9 km uphill on old tarmac and 9 km downhill on a new more slippery tarmac.

SS 7/10 Lybnitsa 24.9 km - Catch all the junctions

This is a modified version of one of the classic stages in rally Bulgaria. The start is moved foreword, so you will miss the most slippery part of the stage, but be careful with the first kilometer. After crossing a very narrow stone bridge you will find more grip and be ready to open the throttle for the next 3km of high speed corners.

Then the stage turns sharp right to a 1.5km-long tight, new, asphalt-paved uphill section, where you may expect a lot of stones and gravel on the road. At the end you will jump on an old narrow road and going downhill trough the woods you will get back on the “main” road.

In a few slippery corners you will reach and pass the dam of Topolnitsa lake, thus approaching the Muhovo village at high speed. But be careful and slow down for a left in right corner section with dirty tarmac and high side curbs. The road continues downhill with a few hairpin turns into the village and then comes a high speed section ending with a series of “blind” corners – great to drive! After passing fast but narrow corners in the Village of Lybnitsa, you will find better grip on the twisty uphill section to go back to the “main” road.

Once you reach the crossroad you will find wider and faster track and nice grip. In the last 6 km of the stage look for the perfect racing line and push hard but be aware of high curbs around and look for the tires, as they will easily overheat.

In conclusion: The stage terrain is diverse, thus hard to keep the pace. Usually it is very hot, so watch for your engine and tires!

SS 11/13 Muhovo 29.53 km - The classics

This is the classic stage of Rally Bulgaria – very fast corners, plenty of grip and many tricky places.
At the very beginning of the stage you will find the road bumpy and dirty, twisting uphill into the woods, changing from sun to shadow. Despite the number of hairpin turns, it is fast.

You will enter the second part after 9km from the start at the highest point of the stage, leaping at full speed trough the forest tunnel on the open road. In the next 6km keep you will find smooth tarmac with the plenty of grip. Keep the perfect racing line and stay away from the insidious curbs, be aware of a number of highly intensive breakings.

You will need your brakes and tires fresh for the 4 km downhill to Muhovo village. Here the road is getting bumpy, but the good grip is still there and it is fast. The high curbs are all around, sometimes hidden under the foliage. You will find a few tricky corner sections and even opposite banking in some turns. You will go through the village at very high speed, but brake early at the end of the straight (especially if it is raining, there is a huge puddle) for a combination of slippery left and right turns before entering the lake dam.

The fourth part of the stage is 7km long and starts with an intensive braking at the end of the dam straight for a hard right. Here you will find no more bumpy sections and high curbs, so cutting corners is welcome. But the nasty curbs will appear once again about 22km from the start, so watch out. The road consists of a number of corner sets and long turns, requiring specific early or late cornering, so again the strict keeping of the perfect racing line is extremely important. This forth part of the stage ends with a few very fast corners and two long straights where you can rest for a second and cool your tires, before hard breaking and passing through a tight stone bridge.

Here you have to go less than 3km to the finish, but don’t underestimate this part of the stage. It is uphill but the tarmac is extremely slippery. In addition your tires and engine may be overheating already. Take a look at your co-driver, he may be steaming as well ;-)

In conclusion: This is the stage you can make a substantial time difference. Push hard, meanwhile save tires and engine.

SS 12/14 Slavovitsa 17.73 km - The “motorway”

Actually, just a part of the stage is fast like a motorway. It starts in the village of Slavovitsa on a loose tarmac with a few very fast corners and then continues on a twisty uphill to the next small village. Then the road turns downhill through the underbrush and becomes tighter and faster. Then you will have to do a precise braking for a short series of hairpin corners, followed by a narrow bridge. Just a 100 meters after that bridge, on the next right turn, you will find yourself into the middle of the crowd, as this is the most visited place near the motorway, called “The Turkish restaurant”.

From here begins the fastest part of the stage, as the road goes along the motorway. Into the next 6km there are only few very sharp turns. Here you have to put “the pedal to the metal” and let your co-driver get scared ;-) Meanwhile, you will pass through one of the few jumps in this rally. If it is raining, be aware of puddles at low places, where you will be approaching at max speed.

At the 10.5km mark you will pass a dirty and slippery place under the motorway, then the road goes uphill, gets tighter and you will find again your “favorite” curbs around. Slow the pace down, as there are a number of hairpin turns and tight places. Here the road passes near the “Trayanovi vrata” fortress ruins. Gradually the road becomes wider and faster and goes up and down trough the forest. One km before the finish line you will find an open downhill section, quite bumpy but with a lot of opportunities to cut corners.

In conclusion: A lot of spectators will be at this stage at the end of the rally, so please, mind the fans!
To finish first, first you have to finish!

Not exactly tha same, though, because now the start point is moved even lower - on a completely new place for start, while the finish of the stage will be just after the crews climb to Belmeken dam's north wall.
