A defective tank already caused great problems for the OMV CEE World Rally Team on Thursday evening at the super stage of the Telstra Rally Australia. The engine sucked in air instead of fuel during long turns. On Friday matters didn't improve.
After six special stages Bulgarian OMV driver Yassen Popov had to park the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX at the service. The service crew of Stohl Racing was able to exchange the tank within 2:15 hours. Therefore there should be nothing in the way of a start within SupeRally.
Clever decision
There was a small glimmer of hope but already on the first special stage on Friday it became clear that the defective tank wouldn't persevere throughout the rally. Therefore the Bulgarian OMV duo Yassen and Dilyan Popov decided to park the car after the sixth special stage. Popov: “This was the only choice. Since the fuel supply didn't work the engine started overheating, as well.
So it was obvious that we had to stop in order not to endanger a SupeRally start on Saturday.”
At the service the team of Stohl Racing worked flat out. It took them only 2:15 hours to install a new tank. Thus the SupeRally start became a fact. “Yassen made a clever decision and avoided irreparable damage at the Mitsubishi. We also located the problem. A conduit was wrongly positioned. That is really annoying. What counts now is that Yassen can gather further experience on gravel on Saturday and Sunday,” explains Günter Aschacher, Team Manager of the OMV CEE World Rally Team.
