It wasn't a good beginning for the Bulgarian OMV duo Yassen and Dilyan Popov. In the morning they had faultlessly completed the shakedown of the Telstra Rally Australia.
But already during the first long left turn of the “Perth City Super Special Stage” problems started to set in. The engine of the Mitsubishi Evo IX stalled time and again. Reason: a manufacturing error of the tank. Air was being sucked in instead of fuel.
Following two special stages and four completed kilometres OMV driver Popov currently lies 6,5 seconds behind. Stohl Racing will now do their all to get this manufacturing error under control.
“It was as if we were standing still. We didn't stand a chance during the long left turns – the engine stalled time and again.
But the Stohl Racing team was able to quickly pinpoint the problem. The manufacturing error by the tank production company is a nuisance, of course, but we will have to make the best of it. We are still highly motivated and I hope that a repair will be possible sometime during the first leg,” said OMV driver Popov.
