Bulgarian Rally Champion Yassen Popov is on to his second assignment in the OMV CEE Team at the Telstra Rally Australia following his participation in Monte Carlo.
Since he didn't get to finish the WRC round at the beginning of this year he is determined to see the checkered flag this time. And he aims even higher for he might very possibly be able to score, given an optimal course of events.
Great performance in Monte
The Bulgarian OMV duo Yassen and Dillyan Popov caused quite a stir at the Rallye Monte Carlo. After the first day the OMV CEE World Rally Team in the Mitsubishi Evo IX was in sensational third place in the Production Car World Rally Championship ranking. Then the slip happened at the notorious special stage Col de Turrini. But as far as Australia is concerned Popov is confident to see the finish this time. Popov: “We've got a perfect car and we know that we can keep up with the speed in this class. Australia is unchartered territory, of course, but we are well prepared and looking forward to meet this challenge.
Successful on gravel
Loose surface was obviously to the liking of the OMV CEE World Rally Team already last year. Back then the first day of the Austrian OMV Rally Waldviertel had been completed on gravel. And in the end Yassen and Dillyan Popov were able to win the European Championship ranking. Popov: “That was a great success. We felt right at home from the beginning. Just like we had never competed on any other surface.”
Experience gained that the Bulgarian OMV driver now wants to turn into WRC points for the OMV CEE World Rally Team in Australia.
